Two filing requirements

Candidates file after submitting a nominating petition or receiving a convention nomination. Covered elected officials file after assuming office. State-level statements are filed with the Secretary of State, while covered local candidates and officials file with the appropriate local office.

Candidate Financial Interest Statement

Used by covered state, federal, judicial, legislative, convention-nominated, county, school, and first-class municipal candidates.

DeadlineWithin 15 days after filing nominating petitions or certification of a convention nomination.

Supreme Court justices file within 15 days after notifying the Secretary of State of an intention to appear on the retention ballot.

Who files a candidate statement?

  • United States Senate and United States House candidates.
  • Governor, state legislator, circuit court judge, and Supreme Court justice candidates.
  • Convention nominees for the statewide offices identified in South Dakota law.
  • Convention nominees of a party with alternative political status for the offices identified in law.
  • Covered local candidates, including county commissioner, qualifying school-board candidates, and candidates for commissioner, council member, or mayor in a first-class municipality.
