One-Time Use of the State Seal
Information and application materials for an authorized commercial use of the Great Seal of the State of South Dakota.
Before reproducing the seal
Requirements
A reproduction greater than one inch in diameter that is used for an official purpose or for-profit commercial use must show the full and complete seal, conform to the South Dakota Constitution and state law, and include the motto “Under God the People Rule.”
State agencies using the seal must also comply with the constitutional and statutory requirements. Unauthorized commercial reproduction or sale of a replica or facsimile may constitute a Class 1 misdemeanor.
One product or use
Fees and authorization
Authorization, when approved, is valid for one year.
A renewal application and fee are required for continued use.
Make the fee payable to the South Dakota Secretary of State. State law permits the Secretary of State to charge a royalty for use of the seal and provides an exception for educational use.
Download and submit
Application
- Complete one application for each product that will display the State Seal.
- Include photographs clearly showing the seal on the proposed product and the product as a whole.
- Include the appropriate initial or renewal fee.
- Return the completed application and supporting materials to the Secretary of State.
