Biennial State Conventions

Convention notices and nomination results

Each political party holds a state convention in each even-numbered year. The party's state central committee determines the time and place, and the chair must notify the Secretary of State at least fifteen business days before the convention.

Convention Authority

Offices nominated at state convention

Under SDCL 12-5-21, state conventions nominate candidates for lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state auditor, state treasurer, commissioner of school and public lands, and public utilities commissioner. In presidential election years, conventions also nominate presidential electors and national committee members.
