Secure Active Designation

Address-confidentiality protection for eligible South Dakota voters who have an active protection order or reside in a qualifying victims' services shelter.

Protecting a voter's residence address

A voter approved for a secured active designation may vote while the actual residence address is excluded from public voter-registration inspection or copying, subject to the exceptions provided by law.

Eligibility

Who may apply

Active protection order

The applicant has an active protection order under the qualifying South Dakota statutes. The Secretary of State verifies the active order with the Unified Judicial System.

Qualifying shelter resident

The applicant resides in a qualifying victims' services shelter and obtains the signature of an authorized shelter official.

Program Protection

How the designation works

Public access
The voter record is excluded from public inspection or copying.
Exceptions
Information may be released to a law enforcement agency, under a court order, or after cancellation by the secured active designee.
Duration
The designation remains in effect for five years unless cancelled sooner.
